Proportion of Top 100 Songs by Key
September 5th, 2017
I found this website called SongKeyBPM which tells you the key and BPM of any song (as well as its duration and various other factors). I was curious as to see what keys were represented in the Billboard Top 100 the most, plotted of course along the circle of fifths. Here’s what I found.
Almost nearly tied for the top spots: C Major, D Major, Bb Minor, and F Minor (around 12-13 songs).
G Major, A Major, and E Major have 7-8 songs each.
The rest vary around 5-6. Not a single key is unrepresented (if we treat major keys and their relative minor keys as the same thing, which, I know, whatever).
Check out the code on Github.
